London paramedics first to use underwater drones, LAS claims
London Ambulance Service paramedics are training with three remotely operated underwater drones equipped with cameras, lights, sonar support and a mechanical grabber arm. The technology is intended to help the Hazardous Area Response Team locate and retrieve people from dangerous or fast-flowing water more quickly and with less risk to rescuers than traditional poles. Two drones are operational in east and west London, while one is used for training. LAS says rapid deployment is especially important in summer, when warmer water can sharply reduce the time available to rescue a submerged person.

Why the Soho spat over 'vertical drinking' could be the first of many
A dispute between Westminster City Council and London Mayor Sadiq Khan has emerged over proposed licensing rules for Soho, including policies encouraging more seating and limiting new venues in the area's cumulative impact zone. City Hall argues the measures are overly restrictive and could damage Soho's hospitality and night-time economy, while Westminster says the proposals have been misrepresented and are intended to protect the area while creating opportunities for new venues. The conflict is the first test of new powers requiring the mayor's office to scrutinize borough licensing plans, with similar disputes potentially arising across London and over other Westminster projects such as Oxford Street redevelopment.

Why the Soho spat over 'vertical drinking' could be the first of many
A dispute has emerged between Conservative-run Westminster City Council and Labour mayor Sadiq Khan over Soho’s draft licensing policy. The plan seeks to discourage excessive drunkenness, encourage more seated drinking and presume against new alcohol-licence applications in the area’s cumulative impact zone, while City Hall argues that it is too restrictive and could damage nightlife businesses. Westminster denies planning to ban standing drinking or restrict venues after 22:00, and says the mayor is politicising the issue while failing to address crime and late-night transport. The dispute is the first test of City Hall’s expanded licensing oversight under the 2026 English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act and could foreshadow further conflicts over licensing and planning across London.

London sees 15% overall drop in neighbourhood crime
Neighbourhood crime in London fell 15% in the year to June 2026, with more than 35,000 fewer recorded offences, driven by reductions in theft, robbery, burglary and vehicle crime. Westminster accounted for nearly 40% of the decline, while only eight of London's 32 boroughs achieved a reduction of at least 15%; crime rose slightly in Newham and Kingston. The Metropolitan Police attributed falling phone theft to intensified patrols and its largest-ever operation targeting the offence. Mayor Sadiq Khan and Commissioner Mark Rowley said London was becoming safer, while Conservatives pointed to longer-term increases in theft. The figures exclude several major crime categories, including business robbery, which rose 19.5%, and police and court capacity remain concerns.

Which London MPs made it to Andy Burnham's cabinet?
Several London MPs lost senior roles in Andy Burnham's first cabinet, including Steve Reed, David Lammy and James Murray, who each issued parting statements reflecting on their service. London representation was ultimately secured through late appointments, with Miatta Fahnbulleh named Energy and Net Zero Secretary and Wes Streeting appointed Defence Secretary. Matthew Pennycook and Ellie Reeves will attend cabinet in expanded roles, while Heidi Alexander, though no longer a London MP, remains Transport Secretary with strong ties to the capital. The changes highlight shifting priorities within the new Labour government as it shapes its leadership team.

Andy Burnham PM – how will his premiership affect Londoners?
Concerns and expectations from Londoners center on how Andy Burnham’s new government will balance national devolution priorities with the capital’s economic needs. Business groups welcome devolving revenue powers, while local leaders warn that policies such as potential property tax changes could harm London’s wider economic role. Supporters of tax reform argue that current systems are outdated and inequitable. London’s mayor signals readiness to work closely with Burnham as debates continue over maintaining resources and influence for the capital under the new premiership.
