Bitcoin Tops $81,250 as $2.74B of Shorts Liquidate
The cryptocurrency market gained about 24% in a week to reach $2.67 trillion, with Bitcoin briefly exceeding $81,250 as more than $2.74 billion in short positions were liquidated on August 20. The rally followed the U.S. Treasury’s decision to double long-term debt-buyback caps, which weakened the dollar and lowered bond yields, encouraging demand for risk assets. Bitcoin’s move above its 200-day moving average and strong ETF inflows supported the bullish case, while Zcash surged after Grayscale launched a U.S. exchange-traded product providing direct exposure. However, Bitcoin’s RSI reached 82.44, year-to-date ETF holdings remained lower, and a $6.4 billion Deribit options expiry could generate significant volatility and a possible pullback toward support near $78,000 or lower.
