Massive energy plant could be built on edge of Cambridgeshire village
Pretoria Energy has proposed a 22.7-hectare agricultural by-product anaerobic digestion plant west of Snoots Bridge in Stretham. The facility would use poultry litter, straw and food-processing waste to produce biogas and renewable energy for local businesses, the applicant and the National Grid network. Plans include multiple digester tanks, a large intake and output building, support facilities and a new access point from the A10. The site could generate about 170 heavy-goods vehicle movements and 40 staff-related vehicle movements each working day, while the applicant says any environmental and highway impacts would be localised and manageable.

Look back at the record-breaking summer that hit Cambridgeshire 50 years ago
A photo gallery compares Cambridgeshire’s hot, dry summer of 1976 with the extreme weather experienced in 2026. The 1976 drought lasted 16 months without rain, drying village ponds, exposing submerged trees at Grafham Water, damaging farmland and green spaces, and causing water mains to burst. Residents received water from mobile tankers, while drought minister Denis Howell urged conservation. The gallery also documents 2026 heatwaves, hosepipe bans and field fires linked to exceptionally dry conditions.
