Morocco… the 'nation-state' and 'the envy of some'
Morocco is portrayed as a historically rooted nation-state that has built influence through institutional stability, infrastructure, manufacturing, energy projects, diversified partnerships and economic expansion into Africa. Its diplomacy under King Mohammed VI has tied international support for Morocco’s Western Sahara position to trade, investment, security and energy interests. The article argues that Morocco’s handling of a mass youth crossing attempt into Spanish-controlled Ceuta demonstrated the state’s ability to absorb shocks, restore border control and cooperate with Spain without triggering wider political or diplomatic disruption, while acknowledging underlying concerns about unemployment, inequality and the delayed benefits of major development projects.
