UK weather forecast sees Met Office predict heavy rain and downpours
The Met Office forecasts that rain could move southeast across the UK between late Monday and Tuesday, with some locally intense downpours. Police called to solar eclipse chaos as crowds rush for free protective glasses
Police were called to Sea Walls in Bristol to manage disorderly crowds scrambling for complimentary solar eclipse glasses distributed by We The Curious before a rare partial eclipse. Thousands gathered because the eclipse would obscure at least 90% of the sun, with the next event of similar magnitude not expected for nearly 70 years. Witnesses reported disruptive behaviour after the glasses ran out and severe parking congestion. Experts warned that only ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses are safe, while ordinary sunglasses offer inadequate protection. The Royal Greenwich Observatory also confirmed it had sold about 15,000 pairs of glasses and depleted its stock.

Solar eclipse warning as energy firm urges customers to 'switch off' on Wednesday
Octopus Energy has warned that solar generation will sharply decline during Wednesday’s eclipse, when more than 90% of the Sun will be obscured over parts of the UK between 6:17pm and 8:06pm. Because the eclipse coincides with peak evening electricity demand, the company is asking customers to reduce consumption between 6pm and 8pm to help ease pressure on the grid and avoid additional fossil-fuel generation. Customers who use less electricity for at least 30 minutes during the period will receive a free hour of power on Sunday. The warning follows a record-sunny July in which solar power supplied 14.4% of the UK’s electricity, peaking at 44% of generation.

Amber heat health alerts issued for Yorkshire as temperatures soar again across the country
Amber heat health alerts have been issued across Yorkshire and the Humber and most of England, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s Celsius and peak on Thursday. The UK is also experiencing worsening drought, low river and reservoir levels, hosepipe bans, crop and livestock concerns, and major wildfires. England and Wales recorded their driest July since records began, while prolonged heat has contributed to more than 2,800 excess deaths and over 40 open-water fatalities this summer. Forecast rain later in the week is expected to provide only limited relief, as extreme conditions linked to climate change continue to strain communities, agriculture and emergency services.

Solar eclipse warning over fake protective glasses as experts highlight eyesight risk
Experts warn that counterfeit eclipse glasses, ordinary sunglasses, homemade filters and unfiltered optical equipment can expose viewers to damaging ultraviolet and infrared radiation during the August 12 partial solar eclipse. More than 90% of the Sun will be obscured over the UK, but retinal damage may be painless and symptoms can emerge hours later, sometimes causing permanent impairment. The public is advised to use undamaged ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses, view the event indirectly or use properly filtered equipment. The Perseid meteor shower will also peak that night.

Homecare provider apologises after vulnerable woman was fed dog food
Radis Homecare apologised after a vulnerable woman in Portsmouth was fed dog food, force-fed, denied food on some occasions and left unattended for prolonged periods. A Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman investigation found that she suffered significant personal injustice, and also highlighted the mishandling of a do-not-attempt-resuscitation document.
