Gaza border violence erupts after Palestinian president visits Israel

29 Dec 2021  |  sowetanlive.co.za
An Israeli civilian was wounded in a shooting attack on the Gaza border, which was met with Israeli tank fire targeting Hamas posts. This followed a rare visit to Israel by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, which drew criticism from Hamas. Abbas and Israel's Defence Minister Benny Gantz discussed economic measures and security coordination. Gantz approved residency documentation for thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. The meeting occurred amidst recent Palestinian attacks on Israelis and complaints of settler violence.

Israel air strikes kill 26 Palestinians, rockets fired from Gaza

16 May 2021  |  www.sowetanlive.co.za
Israeli air strikes in Gaza killed 26 Palestinians, including children, as hostilities with Hamas continued for a seventh day. The death toll in Gaza reached 174, while Israel reported 10 deaths. The UN Security Council was set to discuss the violence, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging all sides to avoid targeting civilians. Israel destroyed a building housing media operations, claiming it contained Hamas military offices, while Hamas retaliated with rocket fire. Efforts for a truce were complicated by the US and Western powers' stance on Hamas. The conflict also sparked violence within Israel and deadly clashes in the West Bank.

Surviving on, and maybe losing, a contested land

26 Jun 2020  |  Washington Post
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans for Israel to take control of 30 percent of the West Bank, a region known as 'Area C' from the Oslo peace negotiations. This area is home to both Palestinians and Israeli settlers, leading to a complex and often tense coexistence. Israeli military exercises frequently displace Palestinians, while some Jewish settlers view the land as biblically ordained. The article documents the lives of Palestinian sheepherders and Jewish settlers over five years, highlighting the ongoing territorial stalemate and the challenges of reaching a peace agreement.

For Once We Were Strangers

05 Apr 2018  |  Foreign Policy
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ultimatum to Eritrean and Sudanese asylum-seekers to leave or face incarceration sparked widespread protests. A brief agreement with the UNHCR to resettle some migrants in the West was quickly voided, leaving the asylum-seekers in limbo. The situation has divided Israeli society, with right-wing supporters backing Netanyahu's hardline stance and others advocating for the migrants' rights. The article highlights the ongoing struggle and the complex identity crisis faced by the asylum-seekers, many of whom have integrated into Israeli society.

Life in a Jordan Valley firing zone

01 Oct 2016  |  www.aljazeera.com
Nearly 3,000 people residing in about 20 shepherding communities in the Jordan Valley are affected by military firing zones declared by the Israeli army. Notices prohibiting entry were posted in 2009, and residents face temporary evacuations for military exercises, risking forcible removal and livestock confiscation. Unexploded ordnance left behind poses lethal risks to farmers and children working the land.

Life in a Jordan Valley firing zone

01 Oct 2016  |  www.aljazeera.com
Nearly 3,000 people in the Jordan Valley live in shepherding communities within or near military firing zones. The Israeli army has placed restrictions on these areas, occasionally ordering temporary evacuations for military exercises. These evacuations can last from a few hours to several days, and non-compliance can result in forced removal and livestock confiscation. Unexploded shells and ammunition left behind in these areas pose significant risks, causing injuries and fatalities among farmers and children.
