Michigan health officials reported the first two deaths associated with the ongoing cyclospora outbreak, saying both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by the infection and dehydration. The outbreak has produced nearly 7,000 laboratory-confirmed cases across 45 US states, while Michigan has recorded more than 11,000 cases and 193 hospitalisations. Officials have linked the outbreak to lettuce imported from central Mexico and supplied by Taylor Farms; Taco Bell removed the lettuce from its US menu and Taylor Farms issued a voluntary recall. Health authorities recommend washing produce and cooking it to at least 70°C, although washing alone may not eliminate the parasite.

Eight men aged 19 to 32 were charged with terrorism and murder conspiracies over an alleged plan to attack the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House, which was attended by senior US officials including President Trump and Vice-President JD Vance. The plot was uncovered after a suspect’s mother alerted authorities about his activities, leading investigators to an online group discussing government grievances and planning an attack using explosives, drones, snipers, and a coordinated assault. The FBI says the group began organizing in March through platforms such as TikTok, Signal, Instagram, and Discord. A ninth individual was separately charged with obstruction for allegedly deleting evidence. If convicted, the accused face potential life sentences.

A Delta Air Lines flight approaching Chicago’s Midway Airport was struck by fireworks during USA 250 celebrations but landed safely with no injuries. The pilot reported a loud bang at about 200ft altitude amid warnings from air traffic control about fireworks along the approach path. The Airbus A319 was inspected with no damage found, and the incident was reported to aviation authorities. Large-scale and private fireworks displays took place nationwide, including a major show in Washington DC that temporarily suspended flights at Reagan National Airport.
