Satellite map shows scale of destruction in La Guaira, the area most affected by the Venezuela earthquakes
Satellite analysis from NASA indicates that nearly 59,000 buildings in La Guaira may have been damaged or destroyed after Venezuela’s June 24 earthquakes. Experts on the ground report conditions consistent with the satellite findings but note limitations in differentiating minor from severe damage. Heavily affected areas include Tanaguarena, Caraballeda and Catia La Mar. Authorities report more than 2,200 deaths, over 11,000 injuries and hundreds of collapsed buildings, with La Guaira suffering the greatest impact. Preliminary UN estimates suggest around 1.2 million tons of debris across the hardest-hit zones, highlighting the challenges for inspection, risk management and reconstruction planning.
