What is the origin of “tacofredag,” the Norwegian tradition of eating tacos on Fridays
Norway’s weekly taco tradition, known as tacofredag, emerged from the arrival of Texan oil workers in the late 1960s and grew as supermarkets capitalized on the demand for Tex‑Mex kits. The ritual became a staple of Norwegian family life thanks to its simplicity, adaptability and suitability for relaxed Friday gatherings. Over time, Norwegians localized the dish with ingredients such as reindeer, elk, salmon and even stockfish. While some Mexican chefs question its authenticity, others view the Norwegian taco as a natural cultural adaptation. After decades of evolution, it has become a distinctly Norwegian culinary ritual rather than an attempt to replicate Mexican or Texan traditions.
