Oswaldo Pirela, a Venezuelan-born catching coordinator in the San Diego Padres’ minor-league system, was released on bond after being detained by ICE at El Paso International Airport during a work trip. His family says he sought asylum, received work permits and followed the legal process, while the Department of Homeland Security claims he overstayed his status after 2018. The Padres confirmed his release and said it would not comment further, while Pirela’s family continues to seek due process and clarification of his immigration case.

Daniel Tirado Pantoja, one of three passengers in a van when Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was fatally shot by a federal immigration agent in Houston, was ordered released after more than a month in detention. A judge found that Pantoja had no criminal record and was neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community. Pantoja and fellow passenger Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego dispute the Department of Homeland Security’s claim that Salgado Araujo weaponized the vehicle and that the agent acted in self-defense, saying the agents’ vehicle struck them and that the van was parked when the shooting occurred. Salgado Araujo’s brother, Victor Salgado, remains detained and is also seeking release.

Speedboat operator Manuel Hernandez was charged in federal court with misconduct and neglect after a 22-foot vessel capsized near the Statue of Liberty, killing 27-year-old Sara Sanchez and her five-month-old daughter, Antonella Garcia. Prosecutors allege that the boat carried 14 people despite a maximum capacity of 10, lacked child-sized life jackets, and was operated without required commercial licensing. Court documents say Hernandez accelerated into a swell while attempting a turn, causing water to swamp the bow. His family and attorneys question why he was left behind despite reportedly being able to swim and why friends took his phone and keys.
