Government urged to 'salvage' Raleigh's name from administrators
Broxtowe Borough Council plans to ask the UK government to help preserve the Raleigh bicycle brand after its Dutch owner, Accell UK & Ireland, appointed administrators. Council leader Milan Radulovic says Raleigh could return to Nottinghamshire at an available site in Awsworth, potentially alongside a museum, creating jobs and protecting the company’s local heritage. Raleigh, founded in 1887, once employed more than 13,000 people but moved manufacturing overseas and has recently faced redundancies and losses. The government says the matter is a commercial decision while offering support to affected workers.

Designs submitted for new Carlton leisure centre
Designs have been submitted for Gedling Borough Council’s proposed Carlton Active leisure centre, which would replace the Richard Herrod Centre on Foxhill Road. The facility would include an eight-lane swimming pool, teaching pool, gym, studios, café, soft play area and community spaces. The plans omit an indoor bowls hall, with the council saying the additional £5.6m to £7.7m cost would make the scheme unaffordable and create an annual subsidy of about £500,000. The decision has displaced the 300-member Gedling Indoor Bowls Club and prompted criticism over potential social isolation among older members. Demolition is expected to begin on 28 September and finish by November or December.

Plans for 60 homes in Trowell lodged with Broxtowe Borough Council
Peveril Homes has applied to build 60 homes on former open-cast coal-mining land near Stapleford Road in Trowell. The proposed two-storey development would include one- to four-bedroom properties, with 45% designated as affordable housing, and is awaiting a decision from Broxtowe Borough Council. Residents have raised concerns about flooding, increased traffic, pressure on doctors' services and the loss of open land separating Trowell from Stapleford. Parts of the area experienced internal flooding during Storm Babet in 2023.

School faith transport scheme for Nottinghamshire could end next year
Nottinghamshire County Council is considering ending its discretionary subsidised transport scheme for pupils attending Catholic and Church of England schools due to financial pressures and a goal to save £45m over three years. A report recommends discontinuing the service from September 2027, affecting about 520 pupils, with around 22% lacking viable public transport alternatives. The council plans mitigation for low-income families, while school leaders warn of safety concerns and potential disruption for students. Ending the scheme could avoid costs of up to £7.5m over six years and would impact 14 schools, including two outside the county.

Affordable housing plan for Hucknall derelict pub site
A long-derelict pub site in Hucknall may be redeveloped into 30 affordable homes under a new planning proposal, with Ashfield District Council expected to decide by September. The former Seven Stars pub had previously been considered for a combined health centre that was never delivered. A local Campaign for Real Ale representative voiced concerns about increased housing without corresponding health service expansion. Planning documents indicate the homes would include off-street parking.
