Inquiry into South Downs National Park continues
A public inquiry into the proposed South Downs National Park boundary is due to reopen, with campaigners and Natural England urging the inclusion of the Western Weald. They warn that adopting a smaller boundary could leave a large area of iconic English landscape unprotected. After the inquiry, a planning inspector will submit recommendations to the Environment Secretary, who will make the final decision.

National park back on the cards
The creation of a South Downs national park has moved closer after Defra agreed to reopen the delayed process following the conclusion of a legal dispute over the New Forest National Park. The proposed protected area would cover parts of Sussex and Hampshire, with possible boundary extensions and revisions under consideration. Defra is to publish the findings of the earlier public inquiry and consult on boundary changes before Secretary of State David Miliband decides whether to hold another inquiry or proceed. The South Downs Campaign welcomed the development but warned that parts of the Lower Weald could remain unprotected, while the South Downs Joint Committee also supported the renewed progress.
