Devastating Stoke-on-Trent fire caused by disposable barbecue
A disposable barbecue that ignited in Sandyford Park caused a wind-driven fire in Stoke-on-Trent, destroying four properties and gardens and forcing dozens of residents to evacuate. Six firefighters were hospitalized, with five later discharged, while two people previously arrested on suspicion of arson remained on bail. The incident occurred shortly before a temporary government ban on disposable barbecues was announced. The Golden Hill Working Men's Club provided emergency support and collected donations, but its secretary criticized Stoke-on-Trent City Council for poor communication. Council leader Jane Ashworth accepted that the authority had failed to support local volunteers adequately, while highlighting its other emergency measures, including accommodation, coordination with firefighters, building control, cleaning and security.
