More than 200 figures from music, culture and science have signed an open letter urging the UK government to restore funding for Jodrell Bank Observatory after announcing that support will end in March 2028. The campaign argues that the £2.8 million annual saving is short-sighted because Jodrell Bank operates the e-MERLIN radio telescope array, supports international research, contributes to monitoring space debris and other hazards, hosts the Square Kilometre Array Observatory headquarters, and inspires more than 25,000 schoolchildren annually. Lancashire councillor's Facebook posts 'made colleagues feel unsafe', hearing told
A Hyndburn Borough Council standards committee found Conservative councillor David Heap breached the code of conduct in three matters involving Facebook posts and other public comments. The committee said he repeated misleading or false claims about Deputy Leader Melissa Fisher's husband's property interests, made inaccurate claims about public questions at council meetings, and breached the code by commenting publicly on the investigation. It did not find that a cartoon he shared violated the rules, though it considered the image disrespectful. The committee recommended a public apology, further social-media and conduct training, and that the Conservative group leader consider additional action. Fisher said the outcome brought relief after months of stress, while Heap rejected the findings and sanctions, arguing that the Labour-controlled council was attempting to suppress his scrutiny of its decisions.

A major partial solar eclipse will be visible across the UK on August 12, offering the greatest sun coverage since 1999, with up to 96 percent obscuration depending on location. Timings vary by region, with first contact occurring between 6:08pm and 6:18pm and maximum coverage between 7:05pm and 7:16pm. Royal Museums Greenwich advises viewing from clear western horizons and using certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses, as the sun will not be fully covered anywhere in the UK. Parts of Iceland and northern Spain will experience a total eclipse.
