NI mum hit with breast cancer at 31 – then sister is also diagnosed after same symptom
Sisters Aisling Muckian and Áine Mallie from Silverbridge, Armagh, were diagnosed with aggressive, hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer within weeks of each other after discovering lumps. Both underwent mastectomies, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and were subsequently diagnosed with the BRCA2 gene. They credit their local community with helping them through treatment and urge people of all ages to know their bodies and seek medical advice about lumps, skin or nipple changes, discomfort and other unusual symptoms. Dr Sonja Bobart stresses that breast cancer does not always present as a lump and recommends monthly checks.
