Unusually hot weather may be causing the UK's annual spider season to begin earlier, as male spiders mature faster and enter cooler homes in search of mates. Ted Helmer of Bug Parc in Norwich says adult males are appearing earlier than usual, while University of Derby zoologist David Gee explains that heat can increase insect populations, giving spiders more food and improving their survival. JD Wetherspoon bans music and speaker calls on phones in pubs
JD Wetherspoon has banned customers across its 792 pubs from playing music or making phone calls on speaker after complaints that amplified smartphone and tablet sounds were disturbing other patrons. The chain is asking customers to keep devices silent or use earphones. Photos show damage to Mousehold in Norwich after major fire
A major fire at Mousehold Heath in Norwich blackened and scarred parts of the landscape after spreading through three sections of trees and hedges. Six fire engines and about 50 firefighters attended, while Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident because several fires were burning across the county, including at Kelling Heath and a primary school in Shipdham. Firefighters described the Mousehold blaze as the worst at the reserve in decades. Authorities urged residents to avoid bonfires, campfires and disposable barbecues and to dispose of rubbish and cigarettes safely amid a government warning of a high wildfire risk.

Man Hospitalised After Robbery in Norwich Near Barker Street
A man in his 50s was assaulted and robbed by three masked men on Marriott’s Way near Barker Street in Norwich. The attackers struck him on the back of the head, pushed him to the ground and stole his mobile phone and vape. He suffered bruising, an arm cut and other injuries and was treated at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Police are appealing for witnesses and information under reference 36/56277/26.

No plans for Norfolk Police to use SmartTag on e-bikes and scooters
Norfolk Constabulary has no current plans to deploy SmartTag, a device that sprays a UV-visible, traceable substance onto illegally used e-bikes and e-scooters. The technology is already used by several police forces, while Suffolk Police is considering it. Norwich City badge installed in driveway in memory of Paul Gray
Iris Gray commissioned MG Building Maintenance to install a resin Norwich City badge in her Downham Market driveway as a memorial to her son Paul, who died aged 56 in July 2024 after a brain tumour. Paul was a lifelong Norwich City supporter, former Downham Market Under-6s coach and dedicated family man. His football shirts were also turned into memory bears for relatives and friends.
