More than 6,400 people in Scotland are waiting for a first appointment at an NHS gender clinic, with most waiting over two years and more than 1,000 waiting more than five. The Scottish government describes the delays as unacceptable and is providing ongoing funding to health boards to expand staffing, improve communication and develop better processes. Referrals to the Sandyford children’s service have dropped following major changes recommended by a 2024 review, which also advised paediatric delivery of care for under-18s and a pause on puberty blockers pending further research. A trial led by King’s College London will study the effects of these drugs, while authorities work to reduce waiting times and support those affected.
