Artificial island older than Stonehenge discovered beneath UK lake
Archaeologists uncovered that the artificial island in Loch Bhorgastail was originally constructed as a substantial timber platform dating to around 3500–3300 BC, predating Stonehenge. Excavations revealed layered phases of construction spanning the Neolithic, Middle Bronze Age and Iron Age, along with numerous fragments of Neolithic pottery. Researchers developed an innovative shallow-water photogrammetry method to model the structure, overcoming visibility challenges caused by sediment and light distortion. The findings indicate advanced prehistoric engineering and the cultural significance of crannogs across the Outer Hebrides.
