Mayor Cahal Burke: Former mayor left note and wanted to be ‘reunited with his mother’
A written inquest concluded that former Kirklees mayor and Lindley councillor Cahal Burke died by suicide after consuming a large number of tablets at his Huddersfield home on 9 March 2026. Coroner Charlotte Keighley said Burke had left a typed note indicating his intention to take his own life and his wish to be reunited with his mother. His death was recorded as suicide, with toxicity given as the medical cause. Burke had represented Lindley for the Liberal Democrats from 2010 until his suspension shortly before his death and was on bail over an allegation involving an online sexual offence.

Councillors promise to “create long-term plan” to restore cherished park
Kirklees councillors Joshua Sheard, Liz Smaje and Phillip James are preparing a long-term development plan to restore Wilton Park after residents criticised its maintenance and safety despite its Green Flag status. Proposed improvements include upgraded sports facilities, the play area, pond, Butterfly House, paths, planting and benches, alongside more regular general maintenance. The plan will be shaped with community groups, but no budget has yet been set. Cabinet member Pip Harvey said financial pressures had delayed work but confirmed further maintenance and autumn improvements are planned.

New Yorkshire Lidl hit with planning hurdles caused by 'coal mining legacy' ahead of opening
Developers seeking to open a new Lidl and Home Bargains retail scheme at Birstall Retail Park have applied to Kirklees Council to clear final planning conditions linked to historic shallow coal workings and potential ground instability. Remediation involved drilling and pressure grouting, with a technical report concluding that the required work had been completed and verified. Approval would remove a major obstacle to construction, with the multi-million-pound project expected to create up to 110 jobs and be completed by the end of 2026.

The Silent Woman, Slaithwaite: Infamous crime-ridden Yorkshire pub could be turned into a nursery
The Silent Woman pub in Slaithwaite, which closed after repeated reports of fights, drug-related activity, underage drinking and other anti-social behaviour, could be converted into a children’s day nursery. Nabbs Lane Ltd has submitted an application promising a high-quality childcare facility for Slaithwaite and nearby communities. The proposal argues that alternative pubs, cafés, restaurants and community venues mean the conversion would not eliminate local social facilities. Public comments can be submitted to Kirklees Council until August 11, 2026.
