Top GCSE grades rise as results come out in Oxfordshire
The share of GCSE entries receiving top grades of 7/A or higher rose marginally to 22% across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, exceeding the 2019 pre-pandemic level. The standard-pass rate fell slightly to 67.3%, matching 2019, while the overall pass rate remained 97.9%. Girls continued to outperform boys, but the gender gaps for both top grades and standard passes narrowed to their smallest levels this century. Regional inequality worsened, with the gap between top-grade performance in London and the North East reaching a record 10.9 percentage points. Education professor Lee Elliot Major said the figures highlighted how geography continues to shape young people’s educational and life prospects.

The district council previously refused permission in principle, but a planning inspector overturned that decision after a public inquiry. Residents opposing the plans cite pressure on schools, medical services, amenities, traffic and other infrastructure, arguing that the development's negative impacts would outweigh its benefits.
