Woman changes her life after sister's incurable cancer diagnosis
After her sister Becca was diagnosed with incurable breast cancer in 2016 and died months later, Mel de Lange changed careers from running a market intelligence agency to studying health research. She completed a Master's degree and a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Bristol, graduating in July, despite continuing to work and raise her children and later losing her mother-in-law Janet to breast cancer. Now working at Queen Mary University of London, she develops digital tools to help GPs identify patients who may have cancer and decide who should be referred for further tests, with the goal of speeding diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer and improving patients' quality of life.
