Early changes in cerebral metabolism after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia: a study in normothermic and hypothermic piglets

12 Apr 2024  |  www.frontiersin.org
The study investigates the early changes in cerebral metabolism after perinatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in piglets, comparing normothermic conditions with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) treatment. It was found that normothermic piglets showed a progressive secondary deterioration with an increase in markers of cell lysis, such as glycerol, while intracerebral blood flow, pressure, and oxygenation remained unaffected during this secondary increase. Therapeutic hypothermia appeared to prevent the secondary increase in glycerol concentration and resulted in lower intracerebral pressure, glucose accumulation, and lower levels of extracellular lactate. The study suggests that TH may have neuroprotective effects by interfering with pathophysiological mechanisms of HI and could potentially extend the window for other neuroprotective interventions.

Cerebral Blood Flow Hemispheric Asymmetry in Comatose Adults Receiving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

15 Mar 2022  |  Frontiers
This study investigates cerebral blood flow hemispheric asymmetry in comatose adults receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) using diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS). The research, conducted at the University of Rochester Medical Center, found that comatose patients exhibited higher hemispheric asymmetry in cerebral blood flow compared to non-comatose patients. The study highlights the potential of DCS as a non-invasive monitoring tool and suggests that asymmetric perfusion may be linked to the ECMO circuit's unique circulatory changes. The findings underscore the need for further research to validate hemispheric asymmetry as a biomarker for neuronal dysfunction and to explore its implications for targeted ECMO therapy.

Measuring colorectal cancer incidence: the performance of an algorithm using administrative health data

02 May 2018  |  BioMed Central
A study developed and validated a colorectal cancer (CRC) case ascertainment algorithm using hospitalization and physician billing data in Montreal, Quebec, to improve cancer surveillance. The algorithm identified 11,476 of the 12,933 incident CRC cases in the tumor registry and 2,317 additional cases. It captured 35% more individuals under 50 and more cases in socioeconomically advantaged areas. The study suggests that administrative data algorithms can provide a more complete picture of CRC incidence, aiding in surveillance and informing interventions.
