02 Jul 2020  |  Nation
The Boardwalk and Crab Shack is a community-run restaurant located at Mida Creek near Dabaso village, known for its fresh marine delicacies and eco-friendly initiatives. Built by the Mida Creek Conservation Community, the restaurant aims to promote eco-activities, protect mangrove forests, and support education for the underprivileged fishing communities. It offers a unique dining experience with a menu featuring local seafood, including their signature crab samosas. The restaurant is accessible via a 200-meter boardwalk, providing guests with stunning views and bird-watching opportunities. Profits from the restaurant go towards conservation and community education efforts. The Crab Shack also contributes to the local economy by providing employment and supporting sustainable practices like crab farming and mangrove planting. According to Dickson Musinga, a member of the conservation group, the restaurant's business varies seasonally, with profits ranging from 20,000 to 80,000 based on tourist numbers.

The article tells the story of Sylvanus Osoro, a young Kenyan MP from South Mugirango, who overcame adversity to succeed in politics. Orphaned at eight, Osoro faced numerous challenges, including living as a street urchin and being mistreated by relatives. Despite these hardships, he excelled academically and pursued education relentlessly. Osoro trained as a welder, worked as an untrained teacher, and eventually found success in sales, leading to a managerial position and the establishment of his own company, Pitface Marketing Division (PMD). He graduated with a law degree from Strathmore University and is pursuing a Master's at the University of Pretoria. Osoro entered politics, winning a parliamentary seat in 2017, and plans to continue his political career with aspirations of becoming governor and eventually president of Kenya. He emphasizes the importance of resilience and the belief that poverty is a choice.

TALES OF COURAGE: Why I fight to save girls from the pain I endured

02 Jul 2020  |  Nation
The article tells the story of Maryam Sheikh Abdikadir, a Somali woman who underwent Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at the age of six. The practice was a norm in her community and was seen as a rite of passage into womanhood. Maryam grew up in Garissa county, Kenya, and became the first woman from the North Eastern Region to join campus in 1989. It was during her university years that she began to question the practice of FGM after a conversation with a roommate. After extensive research and reading the Quran, she realized that Islam does not endorse FGM. Maryam became an activist against FGM, working with NGOs to raise awareness and fight the practice at the community and policy-making levels. Despite facing challenges, including resistance from her own family, she continues her activism. She also ran for a political position as the Garissa Women Representative to further her cause, although she did not win. Maryam's story highlights the personal impact of FGM and the ongoing struggle to eradicate it.
