Sister Wendy Beckett, a consecrated virgin and hermit, became an unlikely BBC art television star during the 1990s through programmes including Sister Wendy's Odyssey and Sister Wendy's Grand Tour. Her shows attracted millions of viewers and later reached American audiences through PBS. Despite her international fame and publishing success, Beckett maintained a reclusive life at a monastery in Norfolk, devoted much of her time to prayer, and donated all of her earnings to the Carmelite order. She died there in 2018 aged 88, reportedly leaving no personal wealth.

An engaged couple died after a bungee jump from a bridge in Polino, Italy, when an equipment failure caused them to fall 330 feet. Their late arrival led them to call the site manager, who kept the centre open for their jump. Investigators determined the cord had not snapped and attributed the tragedy to a catastrophic equipment malfunction. The bungee centre closed pending investigation, and police reviewed potential safety issues including weight limits and harness attachments.
