New Spain heatwave alerts could trigger holiday closures
Spain’s updated hospitality-sector labour agreement requires bars and restaurants to assess heatwave and other severe-weather risks and protect staff through measures such as shade, cooling, shift changes and reduced outdoor work. Terraces are not subject to automatic closure, but outdoor service may be suspended if conditions remain unsafe. Official AEMET alerts can trigger reviews, and employers could face fines of up to €50,000 for failing to protect workers during serious weather events, potentially affecting tourists’ access to outdoor dining during extreme heat.
