Fakenham needs a banking hub, North Norfolk District Council says
North Norfolk District Council has appealed LINK’s decision not to recommend a banking hub for Fakenham, arguing that the town’s large population, rural hinterland, limited public transport, ageing demographic and recent nearby post office closures restrict access to banking and cash services. LINK says Fakenham is adequately served by the Post Office, Nationwide and free-to-use ATMs, but has identified a need to improve local cash deposit and withdrawal capacity.

Waltham Cross fires halt trains between London and Stansted Airport
Multiple trackside fires near Waltham Cross and a large grass fire in nearby Waltham Abbey disrupted rail services between London, Stansted Airport, Cambridge North, Meridian Water and Hertford East. Greater Anglia halted trains on one line, while some services were delayed, cancelled or diverted via Seven Sisters. Passengers travelling to Stansted could use a London Kings Cross–Cambridge route at no extra cost with existing tickets. The London Fire Brigade deployed 14 engines and brought the 14-hectare fire under control after 17:00, while smoke and fire-related investigations also caused a lane closure on the M25.

Heathland fire 'stable' and fundraiser set up
The Suffolk heathland fire affecting RSPB Minsmere and Dunwich Heath has stabilized after burning about 371 acres, though firefighters continue tackling hotspots and roads and footpaths remain closed. The blaze destroyed habitats for rare wildlife, and the National Trust has launched a fundraiser to support recovery and improve resilience to climate change. RSPB said its ponies and other animals were safe, but some habitats could take up to 25 years to recover. Residents, holidaymakers and 21 children attending a Pro Corda music camp were evacuated, while no injuries were reported. Green councillors have used the fire to call for Suffolk County Council to reinstate its climate emergency declaration, which the Reform UK-led council recently rescinded. The nearby Sizewell B nuclear plant remains unaffected.

Holt-based Sanders Coaches boss praises Burnham's £2 bus fare cap
A £2 cap on most single bus fares in England was welcomed by Sanders Coaches boss Charles Sanders, who said it would reduce travel costs and potentially boost passenger numbers. The government-backed scheme, funded with £400m and running until December 2027, aims to support rural and coastal communities where bus fares are typically higher. Local authorities reported rising bus use since 2022, while Sanders hoped the cap would extend to school routes to help families. Opposition parties questioned the policy’s funding and effectiveness, with criticisms from the Liberal Democrats, Reform UK and the Greens following the announcement.

Scientists sail to Greenland to study melting ice sheets
An international team of scientists is departing from Harwich aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough to study how rapidly melting Greenland glaciers are affecting vital ocean currents. The six‑week GIANT project, led by Dr Kelly Hogan of the British Antarctic Survey, will gather advanced measurements using autonomous vehicles, sensors and AI‑supported modelling to better predict how freshwater from melting ice impacts the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre and related climate systems. Researchers warn that shifts in these currents could alter UK weather patterns within a decade, increasing storms and disrupting agriculture, reservoirs and fisheries. Additional teams will collect on‑site glacier data to feed into improved climate models assessing global climate change impacts.

Sheringham bus shelter's demolition brings saga to an end
A 1950s bus shelter in Sheringham was demolished after local councillors approved its removal, ending months of protests including a nine‑day sit‑in. Sheringham Town Council said demolition was the most cost‑effective way to meet accessibility and safety requirements needed for buses to return to Station Approach. Critics, including district councillor Liz Withington, argued the decision ignored community concerns and missed an opportunity to improve road safety. Norfolk County Council plans to complete the wider travel hub scheme by early 2027, including a new shelter, widened footpath and updated artwork.
