Wildfires in France drive 250,000 people from their homes and creep toward wine city of Bordeaux
Wildfires in France’s Gironde region forced roughly 220,000 people from their homes as shifting winds and dry conditions drove flames toward Bordeaux. Firefighters, aircraft, soldiers and international crews battled the blaze, which had burned an area several times the size of Paris and destroyed hundreds of homes. Additional evacuations occurred in southern France and Spain, where authorities also reported deaths and widespread disruption, although officials said conditions were beginning to improve in some areas.
