The European Union will implement its trade agreement with the United States on Wednesday, removing tariffs on American products

franceinfo 30 jun. 2026 French

The European Union will remove its tariffs on U.S. industrial and agricultural products from July 1, fulfilling the main commitment in last year’s trade agreement with Washington in exchange for a 15% cap on U.S. tariffs on European imports. The implementing legislation was published in the EU’s Official Journal, and trade spokesperson Olof Gill called the move good news for transatlantic relations. The agreement includes an automatic expiration clause at the end of 2029 unless extended, while the European Commission may suspend it if the United States does not remove its 50% surcharges on products containing steel and aluminum by year-end.

Taliban officials expected in Brussels to discuss returning Afghan exiles to their country of origin with the European Commission

franceinfo 23 jun. 2026 French

Taliban officials are expected to travel to Brussels for a one-day, technical-level meeting with the European Commission, coordinated with Sweden, about returning Afghan exiles to Afghanistan. Belgium has issued five visas but has not publicly confirmed the date for security reasons. The proposed cooperation comes as the EU tightens its migration policy, prompting criticism from left-wing groups and human-rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, which says cooperation over forced returns undermines the EU’s condemnation of Taliban abuses. The Taliban have ruled Afghanistan since 2021 but are not recognized by the EU.

American oil prices hit lowest level since 2021 amid Ukraine peace negotiations

Libération 16 dez. 2025 French

Oil prices continued a significant decline, with U.S. West Texas Intermediate falling below 55 dollars for the first time since 2021 and Brent crude dropping under 60 dollars as peace negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States advanced. Analysts noted that potential agreements could ease U.S. sanctions on Russian oil, enabling increased exports and pushing prices lower. Data from the International Energy Agency highlighted reduced Russian exports under sanctions and Ukrainian drone strikes, while concerns over long-term oversupply added further downward pressure on global oil markets.

Alcohol still promoted by influencers to young people, warns Addictions France

Libération 9 dez. 2025 French

Addictions France warns that many influencers popular with young people continue to promote alcohol on social media despite legal restrictions and previous court rulings. The organization reports that nearly half of identified influencers still publish pro-alcohol content, often through ephemeral stories that evade enforcement. With a high percentage of young people exposed to alcohol advertising weekly, the association calls for a complete ban on alcohol promotion on social platforms. French courts previously ordered Meta to remove posts from several influencers who violated the Evin law, which prohibits associating alcohol with celebrities, pleasure, or conviviality.
