Essex residents receive emergency wildfire alert tonight
Residents across Essex received a 7 p.m. UK Government alert warning of a very high national wildfire risk and urging them to avoid disposable barbecues, campfires, bonfires, fireworks and other activities that could ignite fires. The warning comes as drought affects more than two-thirds of the UK, temperatures reach 36°C and Essex is under an amber heat health alert. How Essex and Suffolk Water lifted the 1997 hosepipe ban
Essex and Suffolk Water’s 1997 hosepipe ban was lifted in Essex on April 3, 1998, after increased winter rainfall and reduced demand allowed water resources to recover. Suffolk remained under restrictions until May 14 because local supply conditions differed. The company also introduced a temporary recycling scheme as part of its drought response. The historical account is presented alongside a new hosepipe ban imposed during prolonged dry weather, drought conditions and a 29-million-litre-per-day increase in demand.
