Police seize fake World Cup shirts worth £18.5m in major crackdown
UK police have seized more than 220,000 counterfeit football shirts since January 2026, with an estimated genuine retail value of £18.5 million, during a nationwide operation led by the City of London Police’s Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit. Six people were arrested across the operation. Authorities warned that counterfeit shirts may be unsafe, expose buyers to fraud and help fund organized crime, while the Football Association said counterfeiting deprives legitimate football of revenue. The crackdown comes as several Premier League clubs raise replica-shirt prices, prompting concerns that official kits are becoming unaffordable for fans.
