Dolby says Dolby Vision 2 HDR should come to cheaper TVs than the original — and the basic version is less expensive to license than Dolby Vision 2 Max to achieve that
Dolby says standard Dolby Vision 2 is being designed as a less expensive, less demanding HDR option for mainstream TVs that previously lacked Dolby Vision, while Dolby Vision 2 Max will target premium models as the successor to Dolby Vision 1. Dolby argues that licensing the technology could improve picture quality more cheaply than upgrading panels or backlighting. Support currently centers on MediaTek's Pentonic 800 chip, with additional TV system-on-chip suppliers and more affordable compatible models expected. TCL, Hisense and Philips are among the early supporting brands, with broader adoption potentially becoming visible around CES 2027.

Dolby Vision 2 will come to more titles than expected through automated remastering
Dolby says existing Dolby Vision masters can be upgraded to support most Dolby Vision 2 features through a semi-automated process using existing mastering metadata and machine learning. The approach could expand Dolby Vision 2 support across roughly 33,000 movies and TV episodes without the prohibitive cost of remastering each title from scratch. Authentic Motion and Precision Black will require manual creative input because they depend on artistic judgment, motion preferences, and the conditions under which content was mastered. Dolby plans to keep consumer labeling simple, using the Dolby Vision designation rather than separate feature-level or Dolby Vision 2 tiers.
