Luke Murphy MP backs assisted dying with strict safeguards
Basingstoke MP Luke Murphy defended his support for assisted dying, arguing that terminally ill people in pain should have the right to choose how they die, provided robust safeguards are in place. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill would have allowed mentally competent adults expected to die within six months to request assistance, but it stalled in the House of Lords after more than 1,200 amendments. Murphy acknowledged concerns from disabled people and others who viewed the safeguards as insufficient, and said he would reassess the protections before voting again if the legislation returns to Parliament. Labour MP Lauren Edwards is expected to reintroduce the measure in the Commons.
