Matthew Brunwasser

Independent journalist with two decades of experience filing from more than 30 countries, focusing on international affairs, human rights and investigative reporting. My work has appeared in more than 40 digital, radio, print and television outlets, including regular reports for The New York Times and The World on U.S. public radio.

Living and working for years in Thailand, the Balkans and Turkey, I have reported from fragile states and unsettled societies, exposing corruption, abuse of power and human rights violations, and untangling complex international events with clarity and even-handed analysis.

As a one-stop reporter-producer shop, I have covered breaking news, politics and culture, business and economics, as well as features and short- and long-form investigative and enterprise stories for print, digital and broadcast news organizations.

My reporting has won a Columbia Online Journalism Award and an Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Award. I was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar and an Investigative Reporting Fellow at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism.

A San Francisco native, I’ve recently returned home and am available for assignments across the Bay Area, California and nationally, as well as internationally.
