Westmorland Council issues statement amid swimming club row
Westmorland and Furness Council has apologised for unclear language that caused concern over the future of Penrith Swimming Club’s beginner lessons. The council says a review of the club’s Learn to Swim programme is part of GLL’s wider effort to standardise arrangements, and insists there is no suggestion of wrongdoing or changes to the club’s competitive, talent-development or club-ready activities. The club says conflicting messages about the programme’s future remain unresolved and is seeking a formal agreement that would allow its pathway into competitive swimming to continue. More than 1,500 people have signed a petition, while meetings involving the council, GLL, the club and Swim England are planned; no final decision has been made.
