The Journey of the Author Who Self-Published Her Book and Reached Netflix
Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi self-published her first novel, Polygamist, after publishers rejected it, initially printing 500 copies in 2012. The story, which examines secret polygamy, deception, unequal power, financial dependence, women’s autonomy and HIV risks, was later adapted into a Netflix series that became a top-ten show in more than 60 countries. Nyathi drew on her family’s experience of traditional polygamy while contrasting it with relationships based on concealment and a lack of consent. The adaptation has resonated with viewers and prompted an abuse-awareness guide from Amnesty International South Africa, although Kenyan official Geoffrey Mosiria criticized its portrayal of polygamy and called for a ban. Nyathi says the series has increased the visibility of African stories and wealthy Black African characters, while emphasizing that her success followed years of financial-sector work, writing, self-publishing and sacrifice as a single mother.
