United States: On the Path to Homelessness

AMNESTY (Switzerland) 8. Juni 2026 French

After Nashville’s Old Tent City was cleared in June 2025, 86 residents were moved into temporary motel accommodation. The article follows Andy, a former camp resident who, with support from The Hospitality Hub, regained identification, found work and eventually secured permanent housing. Advocates Allie Wallace and Bailey Amos describe the difficulties of displacement and adjusting to indoor accommodation, while arguing that permanent housing with support is more effective than transitional programs. A federal policy change would redirect homelessness funding toward conditional transitional services, potentially putting as many as 170,000 permanent homes at risk.

Argentina: Keeping Their Land Is a Struggle

Amnesty International Switzerland (amnesty.ch) 28. Aug. 2025 French

The Mbokajaty, a Mbyá Guaraní community in Argentina's Misiones province, are seeking legal title to 1,397 hectares of ancestral land so they can live according to their traditions. Deforestation, extractive activity, pesticides, land encroachment, and increasingly restrictive government policies threaten their territory, food, medicine, culture, and autonomy. Community members describe a sacred relationship with the forest, while advocates including EMIPA provide legal support, leadership training, and advocacy. Despite assistance that has helped some communities secure land titles, ongoing discrimination and limited access to justice and education deepen social and identity crises among younger generations.

Dossier: Male Domination — Fighting the Weight of Tradition

Amnesty 1. März 2025 French

More than 20,000 women living in Switzerland have undergone female genital mutilation or remain at risk. Mariam, who was cut as an infant in Burkina Faso, describes undergoing reconstruction at Geneva University Hospitals and sharing her story to encourage others. Omayma, a survivor of infibulation in Sudan, now works in prevention after trauma made reconstruction impossible for her. Swiss support networks provide psychosocial counselling and medical care, while the practice has been prohibited under Swiss criminal law since 2012, including acts committed abroad. Activists stress that men must also challenge the custom and that traditions causing harm should be abandoned.

Dimitri Montanini and his brother Alex founded Van for Life after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, using their vehicle-rental resources to deliver medical supplies and evacuate displaced people. The organization has since built partnerships in Ukraine and Poland, supports rural communities and recently began assisting with demining logistics. Its work includes delivering a Swiss-donated demining machine in partnership with the Digger Foundation, with another expected in January. Montanini stresses the importance of protecting human dignity and the safety of people forced to flee.
