Family in car in head-on crash which killed five teens on M9 were heading to UK wedding
Five teenagers—Jeremy O'Brien, Alex McCarthy, Joey Carthy, Jack Kennedy and Kamil Pustkowski—were killed when their BMW, travelling the wrong way on the M9 in County Kildare, collided head-on with a Hyundai. Four members of a family in the Hyundai were seriously injured while travelling to Dublin Airport for a wedding in England, including a seven-year-old boy. Gardaí now believe the BMW was legitimately purchased rather than stolen, while police conduct before the collision is being examined by Fiosrú. The crash has prompted debate about police pursuit procedures, road safety enforcement and dangerous driving linked to social media.

Man convicted of horror knife spree on primary kids that left girl in a wheelchair and sparked riots
A Dublin court convicted Riad Bouchaker of the attempted murders of three young children and serious assault on a childcare worker during a 2023 knife attack that left one girl with permanent brain damage. Evidence showed he armed himself after failing to secure social welfare payments and targeted small children near a school. Passers-by subdued him, and the incident sparked large-scale riots in Dublin. The judge ruled him fit to stand trial despite cognitive impairments. A sentencing hearing with victim impact statements is scheduled for October 12.
