Tributes paid to M9 crash victims as police give update on survivors
Five teenagers—Jeremy O'Brien, Alex McCarthy, Joey Carthy, Jack Kennedy and Kamil Pustkowski—died when their BMW collided head-on with a Hyundai travelling on the M9 in County Kildare. The Hyundai’s four occupants, including a seven-year-old boy, remain seriously or critically injured in hospital. Gardaí say the BMW was legitimately bought for €1,100 rather than stolen, while Fiosrú is examining police contact with the vehicle before the crash. The deaths have prompted debate over Garda pursuit procedures, wrong-way driving and road-safety enforcement, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin condemning reckless driving allegedly carried out for social-media attention.
