Dumfries House in East Ayrshire was nearly dismantled and auctioned in 2007 until then-Prince Charles led a £45 million rescue that preserved its Palladian mansion and internationally important Thomas Chippendale collection. Now operated as the headquarters and flagship education site of The King's Foundation, the 2,000-acre estate combines tourism with training in traditional crafts, horticulture, cookery and other vocational skills, attracting about 10,000 students annually. Its heritage-led regeneration model is being extended to other British sites and to the Hillview Estate in New South Wales, Australia.
