On the 61st Republic Day.. When will my country overcome the threshold of crises?

07 Aug 2018  |  الجزيرة نت
Tunisia celebrated its 61st Republic Day, marking the country's independence from France in 1956 and the establishment of the republic in 1957 under the leadership of Habib Bourguiba. Despite the initial struggles against French colonialism and subsequent internal challenges such as marginalization, unemployment, and corruption, Bourguiba attempted urgent reforms including the prohibition of polygamy and making public education free and mandatory. However, economic and social issues persisted, leading to protests and the eventual replacement of Bourguiba by Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 1987, who was later ousted in 2011 following a revolution sparked by Mohamed Bouazizi's self-immolation due to poverty and injustice.
