Michael Bretton jailed for life for Craig Hurcombe's murder
Michael Bretton was found unanimously guilty at Bristol Crown Court of murdering Craig Hurcombe with a samurai sword at Hurcombe’s workplace in Somerset on New Year’s Day. The court heard that Bretton, driven by jealousy over Hurcombe’s relationship with Katy Saunders, tracked him to the site, killed him, burned his body, clothes and car, buried him in a shallow grave and used his SIM card to impersonate him for 10 days. Bretton claimed Hurcombe had accidentally fallen onto a metal shaft, but forensic evidence and tracking data linking him to the disposal of the sword undermined that account. Judge William Hart described the killing as a premeditated, cowardly assassination and sentenced Bretton to life imprisonment with a minimum term of almost 29 years.
