ICC chief prosecutor removed from post over sexual misconduct allegations
The International Criminal Court’s Assembly of States Parties voted by a large majority to remove chief prosecutor Karim Khan, the first such removal in the court’s history. The decision followed findings of serious misconduct and breach of duty related to allegations that Khan had a sexual relationship with a female aide and attempted to obstruct her complaint; Khan denies the findings. His removal comes as the ICC faces US sanctions and pressure over warrants for Israeli officials and investigations involving US personnel. Venezuela announced its withdrawal from the court after the vote, citing alleged bias against the Global South. The removal does not immediately affect the arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, which can only be withdrawn by ICC judges.
