Dental caries detection using a semi

30 Jun 2024  |  eprints.gla.ac.uk
Early diagnosis of dental caries can prevent invasive treatments, with dental radiography being a key tool. Deep learning techniques have been employed for automatic caries detection, but they often require large annotated datasets, which are scarce and costly in clinical settings. This study introduces a self-training-based method that uses a small set of labeled images for training a teacher model and a large set of unlabeled images for training a student model. The method includes centroid cropped images and various augmentation techniques, showing significant performance improvements over standard self-supervised learning methods. A fully labeled dental radiographic dataset of 141 images was used for evaluation, demonstrating approximately 6% and 3% improvements in average pixel accuracy and mean intersection over union, respectively.

Individualistic culture and firm default risk: Cross-country evidence

27 May 2024  |  Wiley Online Library
The study investigates the relationship between individualistic culture and firm default risk across 32 countries, using a sample of 15,225 publicly listed firms from 2005 to 2018. It finds that firms in countries with higher levels of individualism have higher default risks, attributed to managers' autonomy and risk-taking behavior. The study employs various statistical methods to address endogeneity and robustness checks, confirming the positive association between individualism and default risk. Additionally, it shows that stringent bankruptcy laws can mitigate this association, highlighting the interplay between cultural and legal factors in corporate default risk.

The findings aim to inform policymakers for better decision-making and interventions to mitigate health risks associated with heavy metal contamination.

Stagnation arising through intermittent usage is associated with increased viable but non culturable Legionella and amoeba hosts in a hospital water system

01 Oct 2023  |  Frontiers
Temporary stagnation in hospital water systems due to intermittent usage promotes the persistence of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) Legionella spp. and their protozoan hosts, posing a challenge for water quality management. The study utilized a novel method to quantify VBNC Legionella spp. and found that standard culture methods often return false negatives. High levels of heterotrophic bacteria and V. vermiformis were positively associated with Legionella spp. concentrations. Routine flushing and improved detection methods like qPCR are recommended for better surveillance and control of Legionella spp. in hospital water systems.
