Katsina Gunmen Release 10 Women and an Infant
Gunmen in Katsina State released a second group of captives, including 10 women and an infant, bringing the total released to 16 after five were freed earlier. The releases followed a week of negotiations led by Governor Aminu Bello Masari, alongside the release of about nine people held by the gunmen. Bandit attacks, killings and kidnappings for ransom had intensified in Katsina, prompting the state to adopt a peace initiative similar to one in neighboring Zamfara. Security analysts questioned whether negotiations would end the violence, while state government secretary Mustafa Muhammad Inuwa defended the effort. About 18 people abducted in an attack on Shimfida remained captive, along with other reported abductees.
