No Ability Bus replacement found five months after closure
The Ability Bus community service in Towcester, Northamptonshire, closed in April because of financial pressures and the loss of a permanent base, leaving elderly and vulnerable residents without a vital transport option. Although West Northamptonshire Council created a £172,000 community transport grant fund, it says no viable replacement proposal has emerged five months later. The council allocated about £72,000 to existing voluntary car and community transport schemes, while retaining roughly £101,000 and the former Ability minibuses for a future service. After concerns from Conservative MP Sarah Bool about providers facing uncertainty, the council said it would survey affected parish councils and conduct further engagement rather than rush funding to operators unable to provide a sustainable service.

Wellingborough land to be sold for community diagnostic centre
North Northamptonshire Council has unanimously approved the sale of surplus land at Park Farm Industrial Estate in Wellingborough for an NHS community diagnostic centre and elective orthopaedic hub. Planned to open in 2028, the facility would offer MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy services, conduct more than 50,000 tests annually and perform routine hip and knee procedures. Councillors supported the development but warned that limited bus services could make access difficult for patients; a review of transport provision was promised. The sale is expected to raise more than £1m, and the NHS will apply for planning permission.

Decision deferred on two care homes on same Weston Favell street
West Northamptonshire Council councillors deferred decisions on proposals by MSA Properties Ltd to convert two detached homes on Church Way, Weston Favell, into separate care homes for young wheelchair users requiring supported accommodation. More than 100 objections cited road safety and effects on neighbours, while councillors said the applications lacked sufficient detail about future management. Both applications had been recommended for approval, but a site visit and further information will precede a final decision later in 2026.

Albion House in Northampton to be swapped for land by council
West Northamptonshire Council agreed to pursue a land swap that would transfer Albion House to Zone Developments in exchange for land on East Island, where regeneration work is under way. A report indicates Albion House is likely to be demolished. Councillors also approved the sale of a half‑acre section of Ladybridge Park to Bellway Homes for at least £1.5m to provide access for a nearby housing development, pending planning approval. Supporters argued that the moves would secure better value and facilitate redevelopment, while concerns were raised about potential long‑term consequences.

North Northamptonshire Council denies request to fly Ukraine flag
A Reform UK-led North Northamptonshire Council rejected a Conservative motion to allow the Ukrainian flag to be flown on 24 August, citing its existing ban on non-UK national flags. Conservative, Green, and Labour councillors urged an exception to show solidarity with Ukraine, but Reform members argued maintaining a consistent policy was essential. The motion was ultimately denied.

Greenfield solar farm near Northampton approved for 40 years
A 78-acre solar farm at Preston Deanery near Northampton received 40-year planning approval from West Northamptonshire Council despite concerns over agricultural land loss. Developers argued the project supports national renewable energy goals, while councillors debated the temporary nature of the scheme and questioned why industrial rooftops were not used instead. Planning officers recommended approval, citing substantial public benefits aligned with net-zero objectives. The proposal passed with seven votes in favour, one against and five abstentions.

Northamptonshire warehouses plan refused by planners
A proposal by Frontier Estates to build nine warehouses and a country park between Old Stratford and Cosgrove was rejected by West Northamptonshire Council despite earlier recommendations for approval. Councillors cited environmental harm, traffic concerns and destruction of a local wildlife site, aligning with nearly 3,500 public objections. Supporters argued the project would bring substantial economic benefits and job creation, while opponents highlighted flooding risks and policy non‑compliance. The developers may appeal the decision to the Planning Inspectorate.
