France Set to Be Overtaken as the World’s Most-Visited Country by 2040
Spain could become the world’s most visited country by 2040, with Deloitte and Google forecasting 110 million annual inbound arrivals compared with 105 million for France. France currently leads with 102 million annual international visitors, while Spain recorded a record 96.8 million tourists in the previous year. The study projects global travel to reach 2.4 billion trips by 2040, up from nearly 1.5 billion in 2019. Separate Amadeus and UN Tourism data identified the Czech Republic as Europe’s fastest-growing destination for air-travel bookings, followed by Iceland and Denmark.

Concerns over £150 million cruise ship development proposed for Falmouth Docks
A £150 million proposal to expand Falmouth Docks would demolish existing buildings, add new wharf structures and create facilities for floating wind-power activities. The redevelopment would enable berthing for cruise ships carrying up to 5,400 passengers and could attract 200,000 visitors annually by 2030, with projected local economic benefits and hundreds of jobs. Residents and environmental groups have raised concerns about dredging, sediment and toxic substances, and damage to marine habitats including maerl beds, seagrass meadows and Fal oyster-fishing grounds. Cornwall Wildlife Trust has submitted a holding objection, while hundreds of residents have objected to the plans. Cornwall Council and the Marine Management Organisation are expected to decide on the proposal, with facilities potentially operational by 2030.

One of England’s Most Beautiful Villages Blocks New Shops in Battle Against Overtourism
Cotswold Council unanimously rejected Bibury Trout Farm’s proposal to convert barns into a cafe and retail area, citing inadequate evidence that pedestrian access and highway safety could be managed on the constrained rural road. More than 100 residents and Bibury Parish Council opposed the plans, arguing that the farm already contributes to overtourism and environmental damage. The village can attract up to 20,000 visitors on a weekend, prompting smaller-vehicle appeals and new coach drop-off zones, parking restrictions and penalties under a Gloucestershire County Council traffic-management trial.

How to get a sleeper train from Paris to Berlin
The direct Paris–Berlin sleeper route was revived in March by European Sleeper after ÖBB's Nightjet service ended following the withdrawal of French government support. The 770-mile journey takes about 17 hours and runs three times a week via Belgium and Hamburg, with fares starting at €79.99 and Comfort Plus beds from €139. The writer describes confusing carriage arrangements, broken toilets, unreliable air conditioning, poor Wi-Fi and limited onboard food, but finds the cabin, bed and breakfast more comfortable than expected. Despite the operational shortcomings, the experience is judged worthwhile and suitable for travellers seeking a lower-hassle alternative to flying.

First Brittany Ferries vessel uses Portsmouth Port’s plug-in electricity
Brittany Ferries’ LNG-electric hybrid vessel Guillaume de Normandie has become the first cross-Channel ferry to use Portsmouth International Port’s new £24.4 million shore power facility. After charging for two hours, the ferry sailed to Caen using electric power to manoeuvre out of the harbour before switching to hybrid LNG-electric propulsion. Sister ship Saint-Malo will also use the system, which can serve three large ships simultaneously and reduce emissions and noise while vessels are berthed. Brittany Ferries says shore power currently costs more than running engines and is calling for government tax breaks; a 12-month agreement with Portsmouth International Port will help offset the additional expense.
