“I wake up covered in glass. But I’m alive”: Report from beneath buildings destroyed by a Russian strike in Lviv
A Russian missile attack on Lviv destroyed or severely damaged residential buildings near the airport, killing at least one person, injuring more than 30 and leaving one person missing. Residents describe waking amid shattered glass, fires and collapsing apartments, while rescuers search the rubble. Volunteers provide food, water and window coverings, and government service workers help residents document damage, replace lost identification and register destroyed vehicles. The report highlights both the trauma of civilians and the organized community response, while showing how repeated attacks have made war a persistent reality even in Lviv.

Life After a Missile Strike: How to Obtain Compensation—Three Stories from Kyiv Residents
Russian attacks have damaged thousands of apartment buildings in Kyiv, while residents face prolonged inspections, fragmented responsibilities and limited compensation. Three families describe paying for emergency repairs themselves, waiting for technical assessments, struggling with mortgages and being blocked from state programmes because required documents were delayed or never completed. The eVidnovlennia programme provides only capped support and cannot cover some large losses, whereas the International Register of Damage may eventually enable broader reparations but has no clear payment timetable. Kyiv authorities say reconstruction is governed by lengthy legal procedures and overloaded commissions. Lawyers advise residents to document all damage, register property and claims, report attacks to police or the Security Service of Ukraine, retain receipts and collect communal repair funds through official management structures. Volunteer groups such as Dobrobat often provide the fastest initial protection for damaged buildings.

“Living Without a Face Is Very Difficult”: How a Former Dental Technician Recreates Eyes, Ears and Noses for the Wounded
Taisiia Yarova, a former dental technician from Kryvyi Rih, now creates highly realistic exoprostheses for people who have lost eyes, ears, noses or other facial features. Working at Lviv’s Unbroken National Rehabilitation Center and St. Panteleimon Hospital, she uses acrylic, medical silicone, wax, pigments and sculpting techniques to match patients’ appearance in minute detail. War injuries have sharply increased demand, particularly for ocular prostheses, which can reproduce up to 80% of a healthy eye’s movement when combined with surgical implants. Yarova says wounded soldiers’ resilience and humor changed how she approaches the work, and she continues studying orthopedic and rehabilitation-device technologies while advocating for greater confidence in Ukraine’s medical expertise.
