Mentmore Towers owner risks losing Batman's manor without bat surveys
Buckinghamshire Council has issued a listed-building repairs notice to the company that owns Mentmore Towers, the Grade I-listed mansion used as Wayne Manor in Batman Begins. The owner must provide evidence within a month that a licensed bat ecologist has been appointed, arrange repairs to the deteriorating roofs and other features, and complete three bat-emergence surveys by August 2027. Failure to comply could lead to compulsory purchase proceedings, subject to further legal action. Historic England rates the property’s condition as very bad, with high vulnerability and a declining trend; conservation group SAVE Britain's Heritage welcomed the intervention.
Mentmore Towers owner risks losing Batman's manor without bat surveys
Buckinghamshire Council has served a listed-building repairs notice on the company that owns Mentmore Towers, the Grade I-listed Buckinghamshire mansion used as Wayne Manor in Batman Begins. The owner must show within a month that it has appointed a licensed bat ecologist and is taking steps to hire an experienced listed-building contractor. Three bat-emergence surveys must be completed by August 2027, with any required Natural England licensing and recommended measures. The mansion’s roofs, chimneys, rooflights, roof lanterns and leadwork are deteriorating, and Historic England rates its condition as very bad, highly vulnerable and declining. Failure to comply could lead to compulsory purchase, subject to government approval and further legal action.
