Record 17m parking tickets handed to UK drivers by private firms in just one year
Private parking companies issued a record 16.9 million tickets to UK drivers in the year ending March, up from 14.4 million the previous year and 6.8 million in 2018/19. The figures, based on companies’ requests for driver records from the DVLA, exclude council-run car parks and could represent more than £4.6 million in daily penalties. The sector attributes the increase to more car parks being actively managed, while critics cite confusing signs, faulty payment machines, aggressive debt collection and excessive fees. A statutory code of conduct promised in 2019 was withdrawn in 2022 after a legal challenge, and a new government consultation has since closed. ParkingEye made the most DVLA requests, purchasing 2.5 million records.

Drivers issued solar eclipse warning by RAC
The RAC warned drivers that reduced daylight during the solar eclipse could require some motorists, particularly those without automatic headlights or daytime running lights, to use dipped beams. Drivers were advised to pull over safely rather than watch the eclipse while driving. Eye specialists also cautioned against counterfeit viewing glasses and direct observation of the sun, recommending ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses or indirect viewing because retinal damage may be painless, delayed and potentially permanent.

Drivers issued solar eclipse warning by RAC
Motorists in the UK are advised to use dipped headlights during the evening solar eclipse, particularly in vehicles without automatic headlights or daytime running lights, and to avoid looking at the eclipse while driving. The RAC recommends pulling over safely to watch the event. Eye specialists warn that direct solar viewing can cause delayed and potentially permanent retinal damage, advising people to use only ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses or observe indirectly.

Train passengers left without toilets on five-hour Scotland to London journeys
Passengers on some Lumo services between London Euston and Stirling faced journeys of more than five and a half hours without working onboard toilets. The operator acknowledged faults, arranged extended station stops so passengers could use platform facilities, and said it was working with Alstom to resolve the problems. One affected service was delayed by 58 minutes and terminated at Motherwell. The trains are refurbished Class 222 Meridian units, which have also experienced toilet faults under East Midlands Railway. British train operators are not legally required to provide onboard toilets.

Half-price train travel extended to 18-year-olds in major change to 16-17 railcard
Eighteen-year-olds will continue receiving 50 per cent discounts on most train fares when the 16-17 Saver Railcard remains valid for a full year after purchase, even if the holder turns 18. The change takes effect on 17 August and addresses a previous rule that reportedly left more than 70,000 students each year an average of £175 worse off. The £35 railcard’s extension is backed by the rail minister, the Rail Delivery Group and the National Union of Students as a way to make travel more affordable for education, training and work. The government has also announced that England’s cap on most single bus fares will fall from £3 to £2 in 2027.

UK drivers steal almost £200,000 of fuel from petrol stations every day during Iran war
Fuel theft at UK petrol stations rose 20% in the five months after the Iran conflict began, with higher prices pushing the estimated value of stolen fuel to about £194,000 a day. First-time offenders increased particularly sharply, while forecourt operators reported growing abuse and aggression from customers. Forecourt Eye and Facewatch are offering crime-reporting and optional facial-recognition tools, although retailers stress that many branded stations are run by small businesses that bear the direct financial losses.

BA Parent Company IAG Suffers 35% Drop in Profits After Fuel Cost Hit
International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways, reported a 35% year-on-year decline in second-quarter profit after tax to €732 million, largely because fuel costs and emissions charges increased 23% amid Middle East-related geopolitical disruption. First-half profit fell 21% despite a 1% rise in revenue to €16.1 billion. IAG said travel demand remains strong, with 57% of second-half seats already booked, while chief executive Luis Gallego pointed to the group’s diverse brands, strong balance sheet and transformation programme as buffers against near-term pressure.

Heathrow passengers to pay higher fares as airport recoups expansion costs
The Civil Aviation Authority has allowed Heathrow Airport Limited to recover £320 million in early third-runway development costs through higher airline charges, which are expected to be passed on to passengers over 20 to 25 years. Heathrow West has also been permitted to recover £4.1 million. Passenger charges could rise by about 15p in 2028 and 30p in later years, while airlines warn that Heathrow already has the world's highest airport charges. The UK Government is consulting on conditions for approving the expansion, which is estimated to cost £33 billion and increase annual capacity to 756,000 flights and 150 million passengers. Supporters cite economic benefits, while Andy Burnham has warned that the project could divert investment from northern England.

Speeding boat called Peaky Blinder involved in fatal Portsmouth Harbour crash was driven by drunk man, investigation reveals
Investigators concluded that a fatal Portsmouth Harbour crash occurred after William Blake drove a high‑speed boat while heavily intoxicated, far exceeding the harbour’s speed limit before striking a navigation beacon. Blake and passenger Gary Huntington died, while another passenger survived. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch identified significant alcohol consumption throughout the day and noted the absence of enforceable alcohol limits for recreational boaters, calling for regulatory change. Industry leaders urged the government to implement long‑delayed powers to set such limits, arguing that continued inaction leaves a dangerous loophole.

Electric Car Grant: EV sales soar as UK drivers turn to government discount
More than 140,000 motorists have used the UK Electric Car Grant in its first year, benefiting from discounts of £1,500 or £3,750 on new electric vehicles. The initiative aims to reduce upfront costs and has coincided with increased EV affordability and a 35 percent rise in battery-electric car registrations. Officials emphasize strong demand for EVs, while industry figures note that the grant has expanded consumer choice. The government also confirmed a pay-per-mile system for EVs starting in 2028, with lower rates than those applied to petrol and diesel vehicles and an annual mileage verification process.

Train stations across England to undergo major changes in fare dodger crackdown
England’s rail network will install new ticket barriers, including taller gates, under a £33.4 million Department for Transport programme targeting fare evasion estimated at up to £400 million annually. Stations across several operators, including Avanti West Coast, Greater Anglia and TransPennine Express, will receive the upgrades from next year through mid‑2028. Officials and the Rail Delivery Group argue that reducing fare dodging will protect revenue and support service improvements, while penalty fare increases in England and Wales and a new minimum fare in Scotland extend the wider enforcement effort.

Port of Dover has done 'absolutely everything' to avoid summer EU entry-exit system chaos
The Port of Dover warns of potential severe congestion this summer due to delays in activating EU Entry Exit System technology needed for processing car passengers. Despite a £40 million facility built for the system and new border positions installed, French authorities have not enabled the required kiosks. UK officials are urging flexibility, and additional government funding has been allocated to mitigate disruption. Industry groups anticipate possible temporary suspension of checks to maintain traffic flow and prevent major delays during peak travel periods.

Electric car sales boom not enough to meet UK’s green vehicle targets, industry expert warns
UK new car registrations rose sharply, driven by a 35 percent jump in battery electric vehicle sales, yet industry leaders warn that growth remains insufficient to meet the government’s zero‑emission vehicle mandate requiring 33 percent EV sales this year. Despite rising consumer interest, competition, and expanded charging infrastructure, experts cite policy uncertainty and market fragility as barriers to faster adoption. Industry figures call for reforms to maintain competitiveness, attract investment, and support the transition to cleaner transport.

HS2’s failures under spotlight as £153 million to be spent on reset process
The National Audit Office warned that revised plans for HS2 should not proceed until the Department for Transport and HS2 Ltd have full confidence in their deliverability, highlighting past cost underestimation, inefficient delivery and scope changes. The reset process, expected to cost £153 million, aims to stabilise the project, with a complete plan due in 2027. Recent estimates suggest HS2 could exceed £100 billion and face significant delays. Government and HS2 Ltd representatives said the reset is necessary to regain control, improve management and enhance construction efficiency.
