Nelson Navarro Navarro is a producer based in Havana, Cuba. I was born in Cuba in 1970 and have developed my career as a Producer, Production Manager, Fixer, and Director since 1996, after leaving my position as a mathematician at the University of Havana. Together with Renzo Trivellini and Judd Allison, I founded Island Film, where I currently serve as Partner and Managing Director. Our company is a leader in production services for advertising, fashion photography, journalism and music video production in Cuba, collaborating with international companies from all over the world. Later, I expanded my work into feature films, TV shows, short films, documentaries, and concert productions. From the papal visit of Pope John Paul II to the Rolling Stones documentary Havana Moon, Joanna Lumley’s Hidden Caribbean, the Ireland–Cuba co-production Viva (shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film), and House of Lies (the first U.S. scripted TV series filmed in Cuba since 1960), I have successfully completed hundreds of projects. My expertise in the industry has been built through years of dedication and hard work. Since 2017, I have been based in Spain, continuing to develop projects in Cuba, Europe, and the UAE. Joanna Lumley’s Hidden Caribbean: Havana to Haiti.
This new series sees Joanna travel across two of the most enigmatic countries in the Caribbean – Cuba and Haiti – to explore, uncover and share the hidden gems that these countries have to offer.
Joanna kicks off her adventure in the back of a classic car in Havana, outlining her 1500-mile Caribbean adventure.
The twists and turns of history have seen these two Caribbean neighbours be colonised, populated by slaves, blighted by natural disaster and suffering sanctions and international isolation. Both countries are undoubtedly poor in monetary terms, but are abundantly rich in other ways, with cities full of colourful streets bursting with the rhythm of life, which then give way to unspoiled coastlines, pristine beaches, majestic mountains and lush forests.
Joanna takes viewers on an amazing journey filled with tears and laughter.
